Frequently Asked Questions!

Do you rent kayaks?

Believe it or not, this is the most frequent question we get. The answer is YES, renting kayaks (and paddleboards) is what we live for!

Do I need a reservation?

Walk-ins are welcome! Customers are not required to make a reservation ahead of time, however they are able to do so if they chose and can by clicking the book online here! Please be sure to sign the waiver that will be sent to your email once your reservation has been confirmed.

Can I bring my dog(s)?

Unfortunately, we need to ask that you leave your beloved pets at home. Leashed service dogs are welcome, however no animals are allowed on the paddleboards. Please respect the other users of this space, if you have a rambunctious animal take them somewhere they can run. The Kayak Shak is not the place for them, neither is the hot car... THANKS! ;)

Can I bring my own boat and launch it there?

We charge $10 per boat. You can launch anything without a motor from our dock. For those of you who don't want to spend the money on a launch fee, there's a free launch a few miles away on Saratoga Lake, located on Crescent Ave, less than 1/2 mile from the light at 9p and Crescent. We encourage you to check it out!

What are your hours of operation?

We are open everyday of the week 9:00am through 7:00pm, weather permitting. You can make an online reservation for up to 3 hours or 6 hours. Keep in mind that any reservation made after 4:00pm has to return by 7:00pm, the cost is still the same as a full 3 hour rental. After Labor Day and before Mem our hours change from 9:00am to 6:00pm, any reservation after 3:00pm has to return by 6:00pm.

What do I need in order to rent a kayak or paddleboard?

Someone over the age of 18 must accompany every party that goes out on the water. We'll also need to hold on to your ID while you're out.

It's always smart to bring water, sun protection, snacks and a healthy dose of positivity! Please don't disturb the wildlife and leave the flowers blooming...

We except credit cards and your gift card, you can make all your online rentals here.

Is it safe for beginners?

This is the perfect place to learn. The water is calm and the current is subtle, so you don't need to be a pro to navigate your way around. We want you to come back with a smile on your face. We'll gladly show you the ropes and give you any tips you might need so that your maiden voyage is a successful one! The only issue that might arise is weather.

Do you have boats and gear for the kids?

Most definitely! There's no age limit on our end. It's all about what the parent and child are comfortable with. We'll work with you to set you up for success! However we only provide life jackets for kids over 30lbs. So if you have smaller ones with you, you'll need to bring appropriate PDF's for them.

Is there a weight limit?

250 lbs. is our max.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes, we do offer private lessons, please call ahead and make an appointment, 518-587-9788

Are you open on holidays like 4th of July and Labor Day?

We sure are! We are open EVERY day from Memorial Day through Labor Day as long as the weather permits!

Do you sell water, sunscreen, snacks or anything else I might need?

Nope, not really. We don't offer much more than a great time out on the water! Please come prepared to be out on the water in whatever weather the gods decide... ;)

Do you rent by the hour if I don’t want to come for the entire 3 hours?

Our hourly rate is $45. We'll let you decide... ;)

Can we take the rental equipment off site?

Yes, we allow off-site rentals. The Shak will require the customer to sign a contract and leave a credit card number in the event of damage. If located on the Lake, the Shak can deliver the rented vessels by boat to a dock for an additional fee. Call ahead to make arrangements and to inquire more information.

Do you have restrooms?

Yes, we have bathrooms available for customers.

Do you take credit cards?

YES!

Is paddleboarding only for really fit athletic people with abs like a washboard or can regular people do it too?

Heck yeah everyone can do it! Don't listen to all the hype. It can be as relaxing and fun as you want. If you want to float around and lie down all day that's awesome, or if you want to work your abs until your nose bleeds then knock yourself out! It might take a little while to find your balance, so if you've never done it before come prepared to get wet!

Is there anywhere to fish at the marina?

We'd love to let you fish from the docks, but we don't because we can't have hooks getting stuck in people or in boats. You're more than welcome to rent a kayak and get out on the water to fish your little heart out!

Are the PFDs (life jackets) and paddles included in the rental cost?

Yes they are, however... sunscreen, water, snacks, and sun hats are NOT! Come prepared, it'll just be that much more enjoyable! ;)
